Alcohol-Free Mojito Spritzer

As I mentioned in my hot toddy post, I’m not much of a drinker these days.  Maybe I’ve developed a mild allergy to alcohol over the years, because most of time it gives me a headache that ranges from mild to severe.  It’s a shame, because I’ve always loved good wine and beer.  And, you know, drinking is fun… but in the end I’ve found it’s not worth the pain.  I usually stick with cocktails when I do hit the booze because I’ve had the best luck staying headache-free with hard liquor.  The mojito is my absolute favorite cocktail, so why should I be limited to enjoying them on rare occasions?

I’ve adapted a healthy recipe from Canyon Ranch, which they refer to as an “Almosjito Limeade.” The recipe contains several juices that I prefer not to keep around, so I’ve swapped them all out for the fresh squeezed variety.  I usually have red-seedless grapes on hand and since the original recipe calls for 1/4 cups white grape juice, I juiced grapes into a measuring cup with a garlic press over a fine mesh strainer.  Voila, fresh grape juice!

The results are so delicious.  I can drink this everyday without the least bit of guilt or pain! And if you want to turn it into a regular mojito, simply add a shot of rum.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup fresh grape juice
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1/4 cup sparkling water
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • 6 fresh mint sprigs
  • ice

Method:

  1. Juice fresh grapes, orange and lime.
  2. Mix all ingredients in a cocktail shaker.
  3. Garnish with lime wedge.

    • I was looking at those carbonation machines and trying to decide if they’re worth it. What kinds of drinks do you make?

    • It’s very refreshing! I miss being able to drink but I just shouldn’t do it ever. I had a glass of wine last night at a wedding and I’m paying for it today.

  10. Hi! What a nice recipe! It helps to grab the summer and keep fall from coming too early.

  11. How cool to pop over and see this! We’re having a mini-heatwave here in San Francisco, so this is perfect, just what I was craving after spending the day in the sun. Love mojitos, but not the booze, so…Yum!

  12. I have a few friends that have allergic reactions to alcoholic drinks as well. This is perfect when you still want to make one cocktail for a party; your guests have the option of adding the rum or not and no one is left feeling like the odd ball out :-) ~Ruth~

    • I wish more parties would offer yummy alcohol-free beverages! I usually get stuck with water.

  13. I’m so excited to try this! I love mojitos, but without the rum, this looks like something I could drink with breakfast, lunch, or dinner!

  14. Allergies can be a bear– I have a similar issue w/ alcohol: can’t do most kinds. I get along well with 100% Blue Agave Tequila. Most other stuff is out. Congrats on conquering this one w/ a little creativity :-) Raw, live-enzyme grape juice sounds perfect… one step closer to living “…under your own vine…”!

    • I wonder why that tequila is different? I will have to experiment with it.

  15. For me, it’s a chemicals & sugar thing– my body doesn’t tolerate either one well. The 100% agave-based tequila does ok for me :-) Can’t promise your body works just like mine, but maybe worth the experiment…?
