Basil Apple Lime Juice

I don’t know about you, but I’m still feeling really stuffed from the holidays.  Getting back into my work and exercise routine has been slow moving, to say the least.  At times it has been downright painful. Since returning home I’ve been watching my processed sugar and gluten intake to try and detox from all of the heavy food I consumed for 11 days straight.  I’ve also dusted off my juicer.  A glass of fresh juice can do wonders when I’m feeling rough around the edges.

This basil apple lime juice is very refreshing and full of health benefits.  Basil contains antioxidants, can improve digestion and aid in stress relief.  Lime juice is a great source of Vitamin C.  Apples are believed to have cancer fighting properties.   I feel almost like new after enjoying a glass!

Almost.

COOK TIME: 15 minutes
YIELD: 1 serving (approximately 6 ounces)

Ingredients:

  • 2.5 ounces fresh basil, both leaves and stems
  • 1/2 lime, peeled (you can leave the peel on if using organic limes)
  • 2 sweet apples such as Gala, cored

Method:

  1. Wash all of your produce.
  2. Quarter the apples so the pieces will fit through in your juicer.
  3. Wrap pieces of the basil around the fruit and juice everything into a glass.
  4. Serve immediately!

  2. I’m not convinced by detox, but that sounds delicious! Maybe I’ll give it a go ;-)

    • A lot of people don’t like detoxes. I’ve never done a juice detox but I do like to cut back on things like sugar and gluten because they cause my cravings to get out of control. After a week of holiday eating my body physically craves sugar. If I go without for 3 days the cravings go away and I feel better.

  3. Even if you are not detoxing is a great drink to add to your menu of healthy eating. I have to try it and if you don’t mind I’m going to add a twist of fresh ginger. Thank you for sharing and happy new year!

  11. I won’t lie, the thought of juicing scares me a little. Maybe I should conquer my fear and burn off the massive amounts of cheese that have been in my recent menu, haha

  18. Thanks for reminding me to take out my juicer ! This looks as good as I imagine it would taste. Delish ! My favourite is celery, carrot, beetroot and ginger and it comes out looking as vibrant as your juice but bright red from the beetroot.

  25. What a delicious sounding juice! I must be one of the weird ones out there who actually like their drinks to be green. It makes me feel like I’m downing something earthy and awesome. I’ll definitely be giving this one a try very very soon. Do you think a Golden Delicious apple would work well with this one? I tried juicing Pink Ladies once and it didn’t turn out so hot. Apparently they lack the water content that a good juicing apple does. Who knew?

    January 9, 2012
    • I think Golden Delicious apples will work well. As long as you’re using a sweet apple not not a tart one, it will be good.

  34. Delicious! And your photograph seems to bring the vigor right out! Do you ever use wheatgrass in your juices? I like the idea of using basil. I have never tried this before. I must at once. Thank you. To your health!

    January 12, 2012
  35. That is a very interesting flavour combination. Lemon+mint, apple+mint, lemon+apple: all tried and tested, but the basil should give it an intense flavour. I should try this! Would red apples be ok?

    January 13, 2012
    • I don’t see why not. Just pick sweet apples over tart ones.

  38. It´s not basil time here right now, but when it is I´m over run with it and there´s only so much pesto a girl can make. I will have to tuck this away and wait for summer to enjoy it – can´t wait!

    January 14, 2012
  39. sounds really tasty! I’ll have to try that combo sometime.

This looks so refreshing. I don’t have a juicer but am thinking of getting one to hop on the juice bandwagon. Any juicer in particular you’d recommend?

    January 16, 2012
    • I have a really old juicer that isn’t made anymore. I’ve heard good things about the Breville juicers.

      January 16, 2012
